What is subclinical acne?
Most commonly, subclinical acne appears on the forehead. However, it can also break out in other places too. Subclinical acne is categorised by small lumpy bumps that primarily appear due to an imbalance of the oils of the skin. When this occurs, the pores become clogged, trapping dirt within.
Typically, the pores become clogged with one (or more) for four reasons:
- Over-production of sebum
- Existence of bacteria on the face
- Buildup of dead skin cells
- Ingrowing hairs
Subclinical acne usually occurs gradually over a few days to a week. During the early on-set, it can be hardly noticeable and seem like it may go on its own accord. However, if left untreated, it can quickly spread across the whole area (most commonly, the forehead) to which it is occurring.
Subclinical acne occurs absent from inflammation and unsightly skin redness. The most common causes of subclinical acne are listed below. A good rule of thumb is to steer clear of cosmetic products that are excessively oily. Also, be sure to check for any ingredients that you might be allergic to.
Some gentler cosmetics also contain natural anti-bacterial such as lemon and peppermint. These can be a good choice if you’re particularly prone to acne.
Imbalances with hormones
The reason hormones are linked to acne outbreaks is due to their relationship to the glands that secrete oil in the skin. When the hormones are out of balance the glands may produce more oil than normal, which can lead to excessive clogging of the pores.
Hormonal imbalances can be more common as we age, which is why the reason is often to blame for adult acne. However, during adolescence, the hormones can often go a bit haywire, resulting in an acne outbreak.
Pregnant women are also more susceptible to acne occurring due to the changes in hormones. If women notice acne outbreaks around the time of their menstrual cycle then it is likely also related to their hormones.
Day to day stress
We all have stress from time to time. However, if you’re under a particularly high amount of stress or for a prolonged period of time then it can lead to an acne outbreak. This is due to excessive amounts of oil being produced by the skin when under stress.

Environmental pollution is something that is often overlooked when it comes to acne. However, if there is a lot of air pollution where you live then this could be contributing to your acne.
Other irritants such as dust in your work or sleeping environment may also be contributing to your acne if you’re particularly sensitive.
Food and water pollutants are also to be considered. If you eat a lot of food that has been wrapped in BPA plastics then this can also increase the number of toxins entering your body. Not only can they cause unhealthy imbalances within, the body will also try to push them back out, and often via the skin, which may contribute to an acne breakout.
